Major General (Rtd.) Amal Karunasekara was arrested yesterday by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the abduction and assault of journalist Keith Noyar.

Police spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara told the Daily FT that the arrest was made by the CID last evening at the Army Hospital.

“The suspect had already been admitted to the Army Hospital at the time of the arrest,” SP Gunasekara said, adding that the suspect was still at the Army Hospital but under CID guard.

The suspect will be produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrates’ Court.

“Most probably the magistrate will visit the Army Hospital to meet the suspect,” the Police spokesman said.

The suspect was arrested for aiding and abetting in the abduction and assault of journalist Keith Noyar in 2008, during the tenure of the former Government.

In addition to this arrest, several other arrests had been made in connection with the same case.

“Several more people were arrested a couple of months ago in relation to this case. They are currently out on bail,” SP Gunasekara said.
