Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Myanmar, Prabashini Ponnamperuma discussed the handing over and repatriation of the rescued Sri Lankans in the camps in Myawaddy, Myanmar, and other bilaterally important subjects during the two meetings she held with Union Minister of Home Affairs of Myanmar, Lt. Gen. Tun Tun Naung and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar, U Ko Ko Kyaw.
During the meetings, the Ambassador also conveyed gratitude and appreciation to the Government of Myanmar, for the assistance rendered in the rescue and repatriation of Sri Lankans in previous occasions. Also, the efforts of the Government of Myanmar, in coordination with the Governments of Thailand and China, in curbing the network of cyber scam were appreciated.
During the meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister of Myanmar, U Ko Ko Kyaw on 27 February 2025, the long standing, historical and close relations between the two countries were reiterated. In addition to the repatriation of the victims of cyber scam centres, other bilaterally important subjects including collaborations in the education, trade and economic, religious and cultural sectors were also discussed. Police Department Deputy Director Gen. Dr. Aung Gyaw Thu and Consular Department Deputy Director General Dr. Aung Thu Soe also attended the meeting with the Deputy Minister.
The main focus of the discussion at the meeting with the Union Minister of Home Affairs of Myanmar, Lt. Gen. Tun Tun Naung held on 28 of February 2025, was on the quick repatriation of the Sri Lankans released from the scam centres and are said to be in DKBA custody. The expedited assistance in screening and verification of the Sri Lankan victims was requested, and the Minister assured the continuous support and assistance of the Myanmar Government for the early handing over of the Sri Lankans, for the repatriation. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs U Khaing Tun Oo; Deputy Chief of Myanmar Police 1 and Police Major General Tin Ko Ko; Police Brig. Gen. Kyaw Zaya and Chief of Police and Head of Division against Trans National Crimes of Myanmar Police, accompanied the Union Minister to the meeting.
