  • State of the country and political turmoil among reasons for leaving post
  • To reveal all after Christmas holidays
  • Will not desert SLFP

Amidst the various developments currently taking place in the country’s political arena, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Nimal Lanza yesterday resigned from his ministerial portfolio.

Speaking to the Daily FT yesterday, Lanza said that he had conveyed his decision to resign from his ministerial portfolio to President Maithripala Sirisena, United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) General Secretary Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary Minister Duminda Dissanayake.

Lanza asserted that he would not be leaving the SLFP to join any other party.

“I am an SLFPer and will continue to support my party,”

When asked as to what prompted him to vacate his ministerial post, Lanza said that various reasons had compelled him to do so.

“I left my ministerial post for several reasons including the current state of the country, political issues as well matters relating to Parliament,” he said.

He went on to say that he would hold a press conference soon after the Christmas holidays to reveal to the public why he gave up his portfolio of Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.

Lanza was elected to Parliament from the Gampaha District through the SLFP during the 2015 General Elections and was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.
