Several lawyers who appealed on behalf of the Petitioners yesterday hailed the Supreme Court judgement, and commended it as a historic decision that upholds the democracy of Sri Lanka.
President’s Counsel K. Kanag-Iswaran, who appeared for one of the Petitioners, said they were happy that the verdict was unanimous.
“I am sure people of Sri Lanka welcome this wholeheartedly, and they will probably be relieved that democracy has been established again,” he told reporters, after the Supreme Court verdict was delivered.
Kanag-Iswaran appeared for Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Leader and MP R. Sampanthan.
Going forward, Kanag-Iswaran said he hope the authorities concerned will honour this and act accordingly.
President’s Counsel and TNA MP M. A. Sumanthiran, who appeared for one of the petitioners, said this landmark verdict will no doubt go down in history as one of the most important decisions made by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Leader and MP Rauff Hakeem, in a Twitter post, said the supremacy of the Constitution and rule of law has triumphed. “What happens now to those who intentionally violated the Constitution?” he asked on Twitter.
