Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday for bilateral discussions with Foreign Relations Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.
This is the first high level official visit from Luxembourg to Sri Lanka since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972. Asselborn is the Dean of the European Foreign Minister’s Corps, being the longest continuously serving Foreign Minister in Europe.
Foreign Minister Asselborn’s upcoming visit will renew and revitalize bilateral relations between the two countries. He will meet with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa during his stay in Colombo.
The official discussions between Foreign Minister Gunawardena and his Luxembourg counterpart are expected to review the bilateral engagement and open new avenues of cooperation in the economic, aviation, tourism and science and technology sectors. Close engagement in the multilateral fora, including with the European Union to pursue shared solutions to common challenges will also feature in the discussions.
Minister Asselborn’s visit coincides with the recent accreditation of Luxembourg’s first Ambassador to Sri Lanka from New Delhi.
