Leader of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and Kurunegala district MP Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday assured a fairer tax system will be put in place by a future SLPP Government.
Commenting on rising taxes, Rajapaksa said while taxes cannot be eliminated, under a strong SLPP Government a fair tax system would be introduced to alleviate the burden of the citizens.
The veteran politician made these comments while attending an education and trade fair in Kirindiwela yesterday.
At the event, Rajapaksa also reiterated his party’s intention to clinch power once more at the next parliamentary election under the SLPP banner. He said the SLPP has no plans to shift to the opposition or acquire its leadership and is instead concentrated on regaining power. “We are aiming to win the next election. We have no plans of ending up in the opposition,” he said.
Responding to questions posed by the media, Rajapaksa claimed the party does not intend to appoint new electoral organisers for the party and the existing ones will remain leading up to the elections. He said new officials have also been appointed to replace any SLPP members who may have left the party in recent times.
The SLPP leader also praised the Government’s recent efforts to tackle the country’s drug problem and trafficking networks, expressing that it’s currently the most commendable program in place.
