  • No leakage from vessel and hull damage has not caused flooding says Navy

The MV Eurosun bulk carrier which ran aground on Saturday will be towed to the nearest port, following Navy divers inspecting her hull for damage yesterday.

According to the Navy, the Navy divers found a small crack on the vessels’ hull, which was lodged in the vicinity of the Little Basses reef lighthouse 10 km off the Southern Coast. The vessel was dislodged on Sunday following strong sea currents and was instructed to move to a safer location, where she was anchored for inspection.

The damage to the hull has not caused flooding of the vessel and there is no leakage from the vessel, the Navy said, explaining that the ‘Eurosun’ will be towed and not move on under her own steam to prevent the crack on the hull from growing due to vibration from the machinery onboard. Hambantota is the closest port the vessel can call at. Navy and Coast Guard vessels remain on site to assist and monitor the situation.
