The Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday permitted members of late businessman Dinesh Schaffter’s family to bury his remains, exhumed at the request of the five-member committee of judicial and forensic medical experts appointed to investigate his death.
Accordingly, Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya granted the late businessman’s wife’s request to bury her husband’s remains in a site from the “Church of England” denomination cemetery at the Jawatte Public Cemetery in Colombo.
The Additional Magistrate anticipates receiving the final report from the experts’ committee on 13 October, having earlier ordered that the case be recalled on that day.
On 27 February, the court appointed a five-member panel of medical experts to perform a fresh post-mortem inquiry into the death of businessman Dinesh Schaffter to ascertain whether the death was a murder or suicide.
The five-member panel comprised Prof. Asela Mendis (Chairman), Prof. B.C.R. Perera, Prof. D.H.S. Fernando and two JMOs Dr. Siva Subramaniam and Dr. B.R. Ruwanpura. They have been tasked with performing a fresh inquiry to decide the actual cause of death of businessman Dinesh Schaffter.
