Marapana to recommend changes to UNP constitution this week

• Ranil tasks Marapana on preparing note on UNP leadership change
• This follows request by UNP seniors for changes to party constitution
• Sajith to be named PM nominee for General Election and lead campaign, says UNP MP
  
   

UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has tasked senior party member Tilak Marapana PC with presenting a note on potential changes to the UNP constitution with regard to the post of the party leader by the end of the week.  

UNP sources said this was after party seniors met Wickremesinghe and suggested that changes be brought in to the UNP Constitution.

The note is expected to be presented to the party for discussion this week. 

Meanwhile UNP MP Asu Marasinghe told a press conference today that the UNP Leader will give up the leadership after bring unity to the Party.

He added that MP Sajith Premadasa, who has been named the Leader of the Opposition, will be the Party’s prime ministerial candidate and will lead the campaign at the upcoming General Election.
