SJB Deputy National Organiser S.M. Marikkar

  • Asks SLPP MPs to ask President for an election directly than on political stages
  • Accuses Namal Rajapaksa and Tissa Kuttiarachchi of trying to position themselves as political heroes
  • Claims public are awaiting polls to vent their frustrations against current Govt. run by SLPP

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Deputy National Organiser S.M. Marikkar yesterday urged politicians from the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) to approach President Ranil Wickremesinghe directly to seek elections, rather than making such requests during public gatherings.

“During their political gatherings, SLPP Members of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa and Tissa Kuttiarachchi are asserting their desire for an upcoming election. They're speaking as if they're Opposition members. If they indeed need an election all they must do is ask from the President they appointed with their 134 votes in Parliament,” he noted.

Marikkar criticised the duo's insincere remarks, accusing them of trying to position themselves as political heroes for the public.

“Namal appears to think he can win the favour of the public once again with such statements. I wonder if he is aware of the dire fate that will befall him and his party if an election is in fact held,” Marikkar said.

The Member of Parliament pointed out that it's both the people and the SJB who are demanding elections, while President Ranil Wickremesinghe, appointed by the SLPP, is delaying the timely conduct of elections, thus denying the people's wishes. “They have no necessity to call for elections during public meetings. They can simply visit the President’s office and ask him to hold the election,” the MP noted.

Marikkar said the people are anticipating an election to vent their frustrations on their current living conditions. “Therefore political dramas will not just cut it,” he said, directing the comment at the SLPP MPs.
