Matara Magistrate’s Court grants bail to six suspects in Weligama shooting

Matara Magistrate’s Court yesterday granted bail to six suspects who surrendered in connection with the 2023 Weligama shooting incident, allegedly linked to the suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Thennakoon.

The six individuals were released on two surety bails of Rs. 200,000 each. As part of their bail conditions, the Magistrate Court ordered them to report to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today (22) to provide statements regarding the case. 

The suspects were wanted in connection with the 2023 shooting incident outside a prominent Weligama hotel, which resulted in the death of a Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) officer and injuries to another.

The shooting allegedly involved officers from the CCD, Weligama Police and the Special Task Force (STF).

Suspended IGP, who is in remand till 3 April is named the main suspect for orchestrating the attack. Following an open warrant for his arrest, Thennakoon surrendered to the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (19) after evading law enforcement for 20 days.
