Police yesterday searched the office of news website newshub.lk over alleged complaints that it carried articles that were critical of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa that were tantamount to hate speech.
Staff at the website said that Police officers searched the office for about two hours and searched the data on the office computers.
Dhanushka Ramanayake, who handled the media campaign for NDF presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa, said that he had worked closely with newshub.lk, and said the police action was an attempt to intimidate the journalists who work there.
“This is the first step to suppression of the media,” Ramanayake said.
