Highways Minister Johnston Fernando yesterday said that the 40.91 km Meerigama to Kurunegala stretch of the Central Expressway will be vested with the public on 15 January.

The 40.91 km second phase of the Central Expressway was built at a cost of Rs. 137 billion by Sri Lankan contractors with locally sourced funds.

“Built avoiding townships and urban areas to minimise environmental and social contact, the expressway will pass through mainly vacant lands,” the Minister said.

It was also said that the Meerigama to Kurunegala window is currently recognised as the most scenic expressway stretch in Sri Lanka.

Five interchange points with toll booths have been constructed at Meerigama, Nakalagamuwa, Dambokka, Kurunegala and Yaggapitiya in the 40.91 km stretch.
