United National Party (UNP) lawmaker Dr. Kavinda Jayawardana moved a private member motion yesterday in Parliament proposing that the Government acquire the Batticaloa campus.

In his motion, MP Jayawardana highlighted the importance of listing the controversial Sharia University under the control of the University Grants Commission (UGC) enabling to list as a State university open for all students to pursue higher studies.

He noted that the sharia law has been instrumental in instilling racist, religious tensions among the people and instilled fear of terrorism in people worldwide.

“It is a common notion that the Sharia Law would be taught at this university. I personally believe that allowing religious or race specific universities it only paves the way for religious and racial disharmony within a country. This could also destroy the peace and unity we enjoy in this country and lead to separation among the people. By listing it under the UGC regardless of the religious beliefs of any student from any race can get admitted,” he said. (AH)
