Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Deputy General Secretary Mujibur Rahman over the weekend accused Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser Basil Rajapaksa and his supporters in Parliament of undermining the enactment of the newly proposed Anti-Corruption Bill.

“The Government has proved yet again it has no genuine interest to bring in new legislation and punish the corrupt. First, they delayed tabling the Bill in Parliament. Now they are delaying the passing of the Bill. Who is exerting this undue pressure?,” Rahman asked.

Rahman alleged that Basil Rajapaksa’s faction in Parliament has pressured the Prime Minister to stop the legislation from going through.  “The Rajapaksas do not want laws relating to corruption to be introduced and for the country to be set on a new path. They displayed it through their involvement in delaying the new legislation from being passed,” he claimed.

“The international community is watching. Investors are not coming in due to rampant corruption,” he added.

Commenting on the recent appointment of SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam as the Chair of the special Parliamentary committee set up to probe the country’s financial bankruptcy, Rahman said it was no different to appointing Basil Rajapaksa to the post.

“Sagara Kariyawasam is in other words Basil Rajapaksa. We do not understand this farcical joke. Will this committee be able to earn the trust of the people or the international community?” he asked.
