Civil society organisation, the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) led by former speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday called on the authorities urging them to address the recent surge in criminal activities within the country.

Issuing a statement, the NMSJ said the number of murders being reported across the island is shocking. “We would like to emphasise that it is the responsibility of the relevant institution’s officials to promptly review the actions taken by the police and their progress,” it said.

“The causes behind the recent surge in crime in Sri Lanka must be thoroughly investigated, and corrective measures should be implemented promptly. We hold that the members of the new Police Commission, including its Chairman, bear a particular responsibility in this regard,” it added.

The NMSJ claimed OICs are being stationed based on political recommendations and said it has led to the weakening of public security in the country. “We hope the Police Commission will proactively take measures to prevent the recurrence of such situations in the future,” they noted.
