The National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) yesterday commended the decision taken by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) to reduce electricity tariffs by 20%.
The NMSJ said in a statement that it appreciated the timely decision taken by the PUCSL to reduce electricity tariffs by 20% after reviewing the amendment proposal submitted by the CEB for the first six months of 2025, taking into consideration the views and suggestions submitted during the public consultation with the PUCSL.
It further stated that in countries that follow democratic governance traditions, essential services are monitored through independent mechanisms to protect consumer rights, and the PUCSL has also performed the same role.
“This decision to reduce electricity tariffs will provide significant relief to ordinary domestic electricity consumers and also the hotel and industrial sectors. It is no secret that many people have been severely inconvenienced due to disconnections due to the unaffordable electricity bill. If steps are taken to restore electricity to such people by providing them with the facility to pay the arrears in 24 instalments, it would also be a great relief for them,” the NMSJ stated.
Appealing the CEB to adhere to such an instalment process to facilitate the consumers, the NMSJ stated that if State institutions were properly restructured and paved the way for proper management, they could provide tremendous strength to the country’s economy, ensure the rights of the consumers and safety of State employees.
