Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya

The National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) led by former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya urged the Government yesterday to withdraw the proposed Online Safety Bill due to concerns about its potential impact on freedom of speech.
The NMSJ pointed out that the Bill includes provisions that could jeopardise the freedom of expression and speech guaranteed by the Sri Lankan constitution.
The organisation also emphasised its concerns about the creation of a commission, appointed by the President, which may have the authority to interfere with the powers of the courts. Additionally, it pointed out that certain provisions within the Bill may hinder Sri Lanka’s efforts to advance its digital economy.
The NMSJ highlighted that while preventing internet misuse and associated crimes is essential, it should be achieved by amending existing laws, such as the Penal Code, rather than through the proposed Online Safety Bill.
The NMSJ also expressed deep concern over the Government’s actions, which it believed could curtail the democratic rights of the people, and firmly opposed these efforts.
