Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya

National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) a civil society organisation led by former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya issued a statement yesterday urging the Sri Lanka Police to protect its goodwill while taking immediate steps to combat the ongoing crime wave.

The organisation said it was alarmed by the recent killings reported and expressed its dissatisfaction at the measures taken by the police to prevent such incidents.

“Although the CID’s primary mission is to combat crime, the presence of CID investigators involved in criminal gangs underscores the need for police and its procedures in preventing crime to undergo organisational restructuring,” it said.  The NMSJ urged the Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles, the Police Commission and IGP C.D. Wickramaratne to look into this proposal.
