SJB Kurunegala District MP Thushara Indunil Amarasena

The National People’s Power (NPP) party submitted a complaint to the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) yesterday against Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Kurunegala District MP Thushara Indunil Amarasena.

The complaint alleges that Amarasena made false statements about the NPP that could incite public fear and panic.

According to former NPP MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Amarasena, speaking at a rally for SJB leader Sajith Premadasa’s Presidential campaign, claimed that if the NPP wins the election on 21 September, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), which leads the NPP, is preparing to create disturbances across the country on 22 September.

Speaking at the rally, Amarasena alleged that the JVP was planning to set houses on fire, break into businesses and occupy them, and engage in other forms of havoc after the elections.

Jayatissa noted that the people are poised to make a historic and transformative decision in Sri Lankan politics on 21 September, and he observed positive signs of support from across the country. He accused those who are aware of their impending defeat of attempting to instil fear, undermine confidence in the NPP, and sow divisions between communities.

He said that the SJB, led by Sajith Premadasa, is taking a lead in these efforts because it struggles to compete with the NPP both ideologically and in terms of voter support. “They are therefore disseminating false claims such as this,” he added.

Jayatissa also pointed out an internal SJB document detailing its social media campaign, which includes creating fake lists of individuals whom the NPP is allegedly targeting for revenge, with the intention of misleading the public about the NPP.

He said a false letter, appeared to have been signed by Major General Aruna Jayasekera leading the NPP Retired Tri-Forces Forum, was also disseminated recently, claiming it was collecting information on those spreading false information about the NPP. Jayatissa noted that a CID complaint has been lodged regarding this issue as well.
