Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Harshana Rajakaruna says the National People’s Power (NPP) party led by the leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) are part of the 6.9 million voters who voted for former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
“It is part of the group that is now promoting the compass,” he said referring to the party’s symbol. Rajakaruna said the NPP coming into power would therefore simply be part two of the Gota fiasco that befell the country. He said the NPP is the JVP itself and a few others have been included as frills. “We are not afraid of the JVP. The compass is the JVP in itself and all decisions relating to the NPP are being taken by the JVP,” he said.
Calling NPP MP Harini Amarasuriya a puppet of the JVP, the SJB MP expressed his dismay at her fate. Noting that Sri Lanka needs international support to revive and rebuild, Rajakaruna asked the JVP to declare which countries will support a Government led by them.
“The international community does not accept the socialist ideology,” he said, adding that people should only vote for the NPP if they wish to turn Sri Lanka into a North Korea. “This is not a time for experiments. We have a good economics team. We will release our economic policies tomorrow,” he added.
Rajakaruna claimed that it is important to ascertain the people’s mandate at this juncture as the people’s opinion and trust towards the current Government has changed. “They were ousted by the people but they are now back in the limelight thanks to President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Nevertheless, this country needs a new mandate and the rulers must provide it,” he noted.
