The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) led National People’s Power (NPP) party yesterday put forward several proposals to stabilise the country through an interim government.
Addressing a media gathering at the party headquarters its leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake shared the proposals relating to the number of ministers, the period of the interim government, and its possible composition among many others.
Concerning the structure of governance, the party has suggested the new government should be an interim government set up for a short period of time and consist of a maximum of ten cabinet ministers.
The party has also proposed that the President, Ministers, MPs, Chairman and Directors of state authorities be paid the basic salary adding that a mechanism with the participation of activists, trade unions and mass organisations to monitor the progress of the program must be established. The party has also said a general election must be called after the lapse of six months allowing the people to appoint a government of their choice.
The NPP through its economy-related proposals have stressed the importance of prioritising support for communities most vulnerable to inflation and loss of income. It also stressed the implementation of a special program to attract tourists in the upcoming holiday season while also seeking assistance from foreign allies and international organisations.
The party also presented several proposals to introduce constitutional amendments to strengthen democracy including the abolishment of the executive presidency and the resumption of anti-corruption measures that included the implementation of the STAR program in Sri Lanka for recovery of stolen assets as well as the commencement of investigations regarding the Panama papers, Pandora papers and the Sri Lankan Airlines deal in the UK.
