  • Minister says committee functions were delayed due to the Easter Sunday attacks, confident of solution in three months

Internal and Home Affairs and Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Vajira Abeywardena yesterday said a National Committee has been appointed to resolve land issues in the Kalmunai North Divisional Secretariat.   The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has called for a separate Divisional Secretariat for Kalmunai North. However, objections have been raised by certain fractions in this regard. Reports have said a group of people including Buddhist monks and Hindu priests are currently engaged in a hunger strike demanding that the Divisional Secretariat be upgraded as an independent body.

“Following the issue raised by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) regarding the need for Kalmunai (North) Divisional Secretariat to function as a fully-fledged independent division, at a meeting held with the participation of the Hon. Prime Minister in early April a separate Accountant was appointed for the Division, who now functions from the District Secretariat,” the Minister said in a statement.

“Further, a National Committee has also been appointed in April to hear the representations of relevant parties on issues relating to land and Grama Niladhari Divisions in this connection. The activities of this Committee were delayed due to the Easter Bomb Attack. This process will be completed as soon as possible, in any case, within three months.”
