The National Muslim Assembly of Sri Lanka has called upon the Muslim community to remain calm and practise restrain during this period of crisis that has engulfed the country.

The Assembly said in a statement that the last month has demonstrated the will of the Sri Lankan people to stand in solidarity with each other in peaceful protests, as united people of a united nation.

“This is a historic time in our nation’s history and has paved the way to a brighter future for us all, if we endeavour to foster and sustain this spirit of national unity and non-violence consistently in all parts of the country,” the Assembly said in a statement.

It called on the people to be vigilant at all times, and above all, refrain from reacting in any manner to rumours, speculation, fake news, and other means of inciteful behaviour that may be intended to cause ethnic tensions.

“This is the time to build bridges with our Sinhala, Tamil, and Burgher brothers and sisters. Only by standing by each other, protecting each other, our homes, our families, and our enterprises together can we ensure that the unity we have forged in the past months remains unbreakable,” the statement said.

The Assembly urged people to conform to the emergency regulations during curfew.
