Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has foiled an illegal migration attempt and arrested 54 individuals during a special operation conducted in the Palaminmadu area in Batticaloa on Monday.

The number of illegal migrants to Australia has increased in the recent past. As a result, steps have been taken to increase naval operations in the seas to prevent illegal migration.

Police confirmed that 399 persons had been arrested since January this year for attempting to illegally migrate to Australia.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said 91 Sri Lankans entered Australia illegally had been deported and legal action had been taken by law enforcement agencies.
