A successful operation carried out by Sri Lanka Navy in coordination with the Police Narcotic Bureau and State Intelligence Service on high seas off the southern coast, led to the seizure of a large consignment of heroin and crystal methamphetamine and two local fishing trawlers on 14 December 2022.
The Navy has also held a group of local suspects in connection to the racket. The apprehension was made by SLNS Samudura, after a long surveillance operation on high seas off the southern coast. The coordinated operation has led to the interception of a suspicious local multi-day fishing trawler which was in the seas off Dondra. During subsequent search of the trawler, over 200kg of heroin and crystal methamphetamine being carried by the trawler was held, with a group of suspects on 14 December.
The Navy also took hold of another local multi-day fishing trawler with six suspects at sea and that fishing trawler was there to replenish fuel to the trawler which was held earlier. The apprehended stock of drugs along with the suspects and two multi-day fishing trawlers are being brought ashore as of now.
