New AG assures to prosecute perpetrators of Easter Sunday attack soon

President’s Counsel Sanjaya Rajaratnam, who assumed duties as the 48th Attorney General (AG), has assured Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa that steps will be taken to prosecute the perpetrators of the Easter Sunday terror attack soon.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa congratulated President’s Counsel Sanjaya Rajaratnam on his assumption of office as the new Attorney General of Sri Lanka when he called on the Premier at Temple Trees on Monday.

The Prime Minister drew attention to the legal action to be taken regarding the fire in the MV X-Pres Pearl containership in the sea near the Colombo harbor and the damage done to Sri Lanka’s marine environment by the fire.

The new Attorney General said that the relevant legal action would be taken expeditiously and that steps would be taken to prosecute the accused in the Easter Sunday terror attack soon.

The Attorney General thanked the Prime Minister for handing over a new building to the Attorney General’s Department and requested the Premier to provide assistance of the Government in the urgent restoration work of the building where the Attorney General’s Department has been located since ancient times as the old building is of historical value.

Pointing out the problems that have arisen when the assistance of state counsels of the Attorney General’s Department is not sought for hearing non-log cases related to murder cases in the Magistrate Court, the Premier instructed the Attorney General to discuss the matter with the Ministry of Justice and take necessary action to reinstate the accepted practice.

Secretary to the Prime Minister Gamini Senarath, Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister Yoshitha Rajapaksa, Senior Deputy Solicitor General of the Attorney General’s Department Chethiya Gunasekara and Additional Secretaries to the Prime Minister Chaminda Kularatne and Ganesh Dharmawardena were also present.
