The Government has appointed a Cabinet Sub-Committee on reconciliation, to propose solutions to the problems faced by the people regarding resettlement, land and missing persons after the conflict in the North and East. 

The move came following the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolution on Sri Lanka that was passed on 6 October, with 20 votes for and seven against, with 20 member States abstaining. 

The Sub-Committee will be chaired by President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Others include; Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardane, Fisheries Minister Douglas Dewananda, Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and Foreign Minister Ali Sabry. 

In addition, two more MPs will be appointed representing Tamil and Muslim communities in the immediate future, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.

The proposal to this effect submitted by President Ranil Wickremesinghe was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday. 

Resolution HRC/51/L1/Rev1 was the ninth resolution to be adopted on Sri Lanka at the Council since 2009. All of the resolutions on Sri Lanka at the Council since May 2009 have been primarily on post-war reconciliation, devolution of political authority and accountability for alleged human rights violations and transgressions of international humanitarian law by both sides to the conflict. Sri Lanka has rejected the resolution, opting to carry out its own, home-grown mechanisms to achieve reconciliation.
