The Election Commission yesterday named S. Jagath Samarawickrama as the new MP for the Polonnaruwa District.
He will fill the seat that fell vacant with the death of Amarakeerthi Athukorala who was killed in a mob attack in Nittambuwa on 9 May.
His name was published in the gazette by the EC yesterday. Samarawickrama is expected to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament this week before Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
The Parliament also observed a minute’s silence in remembrance of late MP Athukorala yesterday.
