Sri Lanka and Nigeria have agreed to focus on projects that benefit both countries from the ‘Blue Economy’ concept.

Acting High Commissioner of Nigeria in Sri Lanka Ahamed Manzo emphasised that Sri Lanka’s ‘Blue Economy’ program is a timely program when he met with the State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dilip Wedaarachchi recently in Colombo.

The Acting High Commissioner said that the ‘blue economy’ program is being planned and implemented in Nigeria and the people of Nigeria will be enlightened on the benefits.

The Nigerian Acting High Commissioner further said that he hold discussions with the top level officials in Nigerian government to adopt Sri Lanka’s “blue economy” program.

The Government of Sri Lanka has promoted a blue economy initiative under the ‘Sri Lanka NEXT’ program in October 2016. This can be considered a timely effort as the country aspires to become a maritime hub in the Indian Ocean region.

State Minister Wedaarachchi said the meeting with the Nigerian envoy was very important for both countries and the two countries should strengthen the bilateral relationship.

The State Minister further said that the two countries should focus attention on launching a program to exchange technology and knowledge in the mutual interest to benefit both countries. In addition, he pointed out the need to focus on the benefits Sri Lanka could receive from such a program.
