The Foreign Affairs Ministry issuing a statement confirmed that nine individuals out of 29 injured from the unfortunate accident are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
On 9 August, a group of Sri Lankans working in a construction project at the Istanbul Airport met with this unfortunate accident in the Eyüpsultan area of Istanbul. According to media reports, 40 people were travelling in the shuttle bus at the time of the accident, of which 29 were Sri Lankans.
They had been returning to their lodgings after finishing their work shift when the driver lost control of the bus, which had veered off the main road and toppled into a six-meter precipice.
The nine individuals are currently receiving medical care in three distinct hospitals within Istanbul. The remaining 20 individuals, who had been receiving medical attention, were discharged on the same day, the statement added.
Throughout this challenging time, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Turkey has maintained consistent communication with both the company employing the Sri Lankan workers and the hospital authorities. This proactive approach ensured that updates on the injured individuals’ condition are promptly received, and the necessary support is offered in coordination with the employing company.
In addition to liaising with the employing company and hospital authorities, the Embassy is also in contact with the Turkish Foreign Ministry. These engagements aim to facilitate a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that all required assistance is extended to the affected Sri Lankans.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has emphasised its commitment to closely monitoring the situation. Collaborative efforts between the Ministry and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Ankara are underway to guarantee the well-being and recovery of the affected Sri Lankans.
