In an effort to make responsibilities of the Opposition more effective, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has taken steps to implement a fresh system to directly obtain views of trade unions, civil society organisations, professionals, and the public.

A media and research unit under the Opposition Leader’s Office has been established, and a discussion was held in Parliament yesterday morning (15) by Opposition Leader Premadasa to launch this new initiative to get the active support and participation of trade unions.

The main objective of the initiative is to obtain positive information during the main debate and committee stage when presenting the 2025 Budget.

Premadasa addressing the gathering emphasised the importance of contributing to parliamentary debates based on accurate information, and also the effectiveness of the participatory process in a representative democracy.

He also highlighted that the role of a people-oriented Opposition could be more effective by providing the views of trade unions during parliamentary sessions, not limiting it to the Budget debate.

In order to obtain public opinion during the Budget debate, the Opposition Leader’s Office has also launched a pilot project on social media platforms titled ‘We in the Opposition are ready to give space to your views during the Budget debate.’

The public can submit their comments in writing to the Opposition Leader’s Office via Whatsapp (+94 75 9570 570) and email at [email protected], as well as to the Opposition Leader’s Office, Parliament of Sri Lanka, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte.
