PM’s Mahajana Eksath Peramuna pledges support to President 

The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) led by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, who is also a childhood friend of President Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to back Wickremesinghe’s candidacy in the upcoming Presidential election. 

The decision was taken at the party’s central committee meeting held in Maharagama yesterday.

MEP General Secretary Tissa Yapa Jayewardena, Deputy Secretary Yadamini Gunawardena MP, Assistant Secretary Vijaya Ratnayake, Deputy Chairman Githanjana Gunawardena and other members of the Central Committee had taken part in this meeting. 

Party Vice President Sisira Jayakody confirmed that the Prime Minister will back President Wickremesinghe along with 91 other members of Parliament. He revealed an agreement will be signed and an alliance formed to further support President Wickremesinghe moving forward. The MEP is a long-time ally of the Rajapaksa-led Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). Dinesh Gunawardena led the joint Opposition during the good governance Government, paving the way for the establishment of the SLPP.
