Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday the incumbent has worked its best to improve the education system in the country to assure the equal right to education.
Speaking at an event held at Erukkalampiddy Muslim Madhya Maha Vidyalaya in Mannar to declare open new technical building and pavilion, Wickremesinghe said he was happy to be the Prime Minister of the Government that has spent the highest amount on education in the country’s history.
“Around 50% of the students sit for the GCE Ordinary Level and leave school. We have provided 13 years of compulsory education for those who leave school to enter into the vocational stream,” Wickremesinghe said.
He questioned those who criticise the incumbent Government’s education policies on why they were unable to introduce new policies to develop education when they were in power. “Anyone can say they will develop the education system. However, when they were in power they have not used the opportunity to develop education as they were incapable of doing so.”
Wickremesinghe said the Government was capable of introducing the 13-year compulsory education system to assure the right to education for all.
The Prime Minister noted he aims to allocate 6% of Gross Domestic Product for education. He pointed out that he is ready to argue with anyone that claims to develop the country’s education system better than him.
