Electricity regulator the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka yesterday said the duration of power cuts could be reduced significantly in the days ahead.

PUCSL Chairman Janaka Rathnayake said the PUCSL received written confirmation from Secretaries of the Ministries of Power and Energy that stocks of fuels will be allocated to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) for power generation.

He believes the power cuts will be prevalent in lesser durations, till the reservoirs receive sufficient rainfall.

Rathnayake said Sri Lanka received 12,000 tons of diesel through the Indian Credit Line on 2 April and 6,000 tons through Indian Oil Company (IOC).

In addition, Sri Lanka will receive another 12,000 tons of diesel on 5 and 6 April, and a consignment of 25,000 tons of furnace oil on 6 and 7 April through the Indian Credit Line. Rathnayake also said that a reasonable allocation will be made when a shipment of fuel anchored at sea is cleared following the payment.

“In this backdrop, the PUCSL guarantees the public that prevailing power cuts will be reduced considerably in the days ahead, which includes the duration in Sinhala and Tamil New year,” Rathnayake added.
