Petitions challenging Gazette on vaccine mandate dismissed

Fundamental Rights petitions filed challenging a Gazette making it mandatory for persons to be fully vaccinated when entering public places were dismissed by the Supreme Court yesterday.

On 25 January, an extraordinary Gazette was issued making it mandatory for persons to have proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 when entering any public place. As per the regulations, a public place is “any place or mode of transportation used in public transport to which the public have access, whether as of right or otherwise, whether on payment or not, whether on invitation or not.”

A person will be considered fully vaccinated if they have obtained all required doses of the relevant vaccine as specified by the Health Services Director General.

The provisions of these regulations are to come into effect on 30 April.
