For the first time in Sri Lanka’s Police history, three Women Senior Superintendents of Police (SSP) have been promoted to the rank of acting Deputy Inspectors General (DIG) at once, Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said yesterday.

The women SSPs promoted are N.D. Seneviratne, A.R. Jayasundara and W.J. Padmini.

The Police Spokesman said the promotions were made with the approval of the Ministry of Public Security Secretary, subject to the cover approval of the Public Service Commission.

DIG Bimsani Jasinghaarachchi was the first woman SSP to be appointed to the said rank in Sri Lanka’s Police history. Sri Lanka Police at present includes four female DIGs.

Police Spokesman Thalduwa said the new reform plans of the Sri Lanka Police had given women officers the opportunity to be promoted to the rank of Inspectors General of Police (IGP) in the future on the basis of skills, merit and talent.
