Police yesterday denied they were engaged in investigating a doctor who allegedly conducted unauthorised sterilisation operations on as many as 4000 Sinhala Buddhist women, and insisted the editors and reporter of the Sinhala newspaper was solely responsible for the article.
The lead front page story of the newspaper claimed to give details of a doctor linked to the banned National Thowheeth Jama’ath organisation, who had allegedly carried out unauthorised sterilisation operations on up to 4000 Sinhala Buddhist women.
“There is no such Police investigation. We have made inquiries from all Police divisions and there is no one investigating such a claim. No Police division has been received a complaint of this nature. The details contained in this article are entirely the responsibility of the newspaper editor and the reporter,” Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said in a video statement.
