Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera yesterday met with the United Nations Development Programme team in Sri Lanka to discuss Sri Lanka’s energy policies ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) to be held in Egypt next month.
“Sri Lanka’s renewable energy policies, e-mobility, fossil fuel subsidies, and financial assistance for implementing green goals were discussed,” he said via Twitter yesterday.
COP27 is the 27th annual UN meeting on climate. The world leaders are set to deliberate action to tackle climate change, at the UN climate from 6 to 18 November in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt.
Minister Wijesekera also noted that plans for the power and energy sectors were also taken up for discussion. COP27 is an annual climate summit for Governments to agree on the steps to limit global temperature rises.
Governments are referred to as COPs, which stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’. The parties are the attending countries that signed up to the original UN climate agreement in 1992.
