President Anura Kumara Dissanayake underscored the importance of the media as a key partner in building a better State, not an outsider —but as an integral force in driving positive change.

Addressing a meeting with heads of electronic media organisations at the Presidential Secretariat on Thursday, the President reinforced the media’s vital role in improving the lives of citizens and shaping the country’s future.

Highlighting the people’s mandate for a new political culture, President Dissanayake invited media organisations to collaborate in fostering the political, social, and economic transformations that the public desires.

He encouraged the media to hold the Government accountable through constructive criticism while maintaining responsible reporting standards, particularly on sensitive issues that could impact national harmony.

The President reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding media freedom, stating that the Government would neither compromise nor restrict it. However, he cautioned against the dissemination of false information, stressing the role of accurate reporting in preserving peace and unity.

Recalling the country’s history of enduring decades of war, the President declared that racism would never be permitted again.

During the meeting, the President also provided insights into the Government’s plans for addressing pressing issues, including poverty eradication and the Clean Sri Lanka program.

The event was attended by members of the Sri Lanka Broadcasters’ Guild, along with senior officials, including heads of electronic media institutions, group directors, chief executive officers, and general managers.
