Primary sections of all schools except in Western Province and isolated areas to reopen on 11 Jan.

Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris yesterday said that 11 January had been set for the recommencement of the first term in schools for the year 2021.

The Minister of Education while participating in a media briefing said the primary sections of all schools for Grades 1 to 5 and Pre-Schools in the island except in the Western Province and isolated areas would be reopened on 11 January 2021.

He said it was not possible to open schools immediately in the Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha Districts of the Western Province and in isolated areas. The situation will be reviewed every 10 days and a decision will be taken to open the schools in these areas as soon as possible. He said schools in other areas reopened for Grades 6 through 13 on 23 November and academic activities would resume for Grades 1-5 from Monday, 11 January.
