The Prisoners Welfare Association held a simple ceremony to mark the 20th annual National Prisoners Day recently at the Prison Headquarters. The session was presided over by Prisoners Welfare Association Chairman Milinda Moragoda. Prisons Commissioner General Jayasiri Tennakoon and Commissioner of Prisons (Rehabilitation) Chandana Ekanayake represented the Prisons Department. The Prisoners Welfare Association was represented by Vice-Chairmen Ven. Angunna Badulle Gnanadassi Thero, R.A.D. Sirisena, Shelton de Silva and Secretary Kusum Sadanayake.
In addition, representatives from the People’s Bank, Bank of Ceylon and Ceylon Electricity Board presented scholarships to a group of children of prisoner inmates.
The Prisoners Welfare Association is over 102 years old and is one of the oldest charity organizations in the country. Consisting of both volunteers and prison rehabilitation officials, it represents 32 prison communities across the island.
