A Private Member Bill to repeal the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act (MMDA) No. of 2019, which is to be presented to Parliament by National List MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thero, has been published in the Gazette.

Along with it, another Bill, also to be presented by the MP, to amend the Marriages (General) (Amendment) Act No. of 2019 to make this general law applicable to all citizens, was also published.

The Bill seeks to make the Marriages (General) Ordinance No. 19 of 1907 to prevail over all other marriage laws, including the Muslim Marriages and Divorce Act.

The Bills can be tabled in Parliament within two weeks.
