Prosperous village project in 14,000 GN divisions from Feb.

An ambitious village level development program named “Sapiri Gamak”, or ‘a prosperous village’, will get underway early next year throughout the 14,000 Grama Niladhari divisions to harness rural participation in development activities.

The Cabinet gave its approval for the project on Wednesday which is part of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s National Policy Framework “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour”.

Under this program, projects costing between Rs. 500,000 and Rs. 2 million will be implemented in each Grama Niladhari division with the participation of villagers.

Many of the projects will be for infrastructure development in villages, such as roads, anicuts, culverts, and facilities for schools etc., Cabinet spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardana said.

He said all Divisional and District Secretariats have been asked to gather information from each GN division on their immediate needs, and the information compiled by mid-January.

 “We hope to start this project by February 2020,” the Minister added.
