Public official arrested for bribery

The Unit Manager of the Mahaweli Authority attached to Welikanda Sinhepura Division was arrested yesterday by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for soliciting a bribe of Rs. 20,000.

The suspect demanded the bribe to prepare documents and provide recommendations for a land belonging to the Mahaweli Authority from a resident of Welikanda, CIABOC Director of Investigations SSP Priyantha Chandrasiri said. 

SSP Chandrasiri also said the suspect was arrested in his office while obtaining the bribe. Further investigations are being carried out and the suspect would be produce before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate Court, he said.
