Railways Locomotive Operating Engineers’ Union Secretary S.R.C.M. Senanayake last night confirmed the conclusion of their trade union action, following a series of assurances provided by Railway Authority and Ministry officials.

He said a discussion took place at the Ministry premises, involving key representatives from the Railways General Manager’s office and officials from the Transport Ministry.

During this meeting, a consensus was reached to present a viable solution to the union’s concerns within a two-week timeframe. Subsequently, the union made the decision to call off the train strike.

Since the strike’s commencement at midnight on Monday, the Railway Locomotive Operating Engineers’ Union had been advocating for various critical demands, foremost among them being alterations to the recruitment process and promotions.

This industrial action had resulted in a standstill for commuters, with over 128 train journeys canceled due to the withdrawal of drivers from their duties.

However, to mitigate the impact, the Railway Department swiftly mobilised by assigning 139 scheduled train services on both morning and evening shifts to accommodate affected passengers.

In parallel, official notices were dispatched to the 84 railway engine drivers who actively participated in the strike. They have been urgently summoned to return to their duties. Failure to comply may lead to the forfeiture of their positions.
