The United National Party (UNP) says its leader and former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should be included in the National Economic Council recently appointed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Speaking to media while taking part in the ongoing UNP membership promotion program, UNP Chairman Wajira Abeywardena said at a time when the country’s economy is completely collapsed former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should represent the Economic Council.

He said the former Premier is capable of handling the economy and will be able to provide valuable inputs to resolve the current financial crisis.

Therefore, it is imperative that the present administration obtains advice from him, the UNP Chairman stressed.

The United National Party (UNP) Member Promotion Program was launched in Dehiwala, Ratmalana and Avissawella electorates throughout the day.

The UNP Chairman said it is not the time to form a national Government but a period to rally together and provide answers to the issues faced by the people.

“There is no point in talking about a national Government. We have learnt a good lesson from forming national governments last time. Then Government took all the credit for good things and blamed the UNP for all the misdeeds,” he said, adding that the UNP leader has been Prime Minister for five times and what’s left for him is to be the President.
