UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake claimed that 75% of the Working Committee stands by the decision to face the upcoming General Elections under the Elephant symbol. Karunanayake made the statement at press conference held at the party headquarters yesterday where he claimed that there were no fractions within the UNP. “If anyone is leaving you go and ask them what they are doing, as far as we are concerned, we are moving ahead as one party,” he stressed.

Karunanayake stressed that the SJB nominations board can only be appointed after the Parliament is dissolved and that its composition will be known at such as time. “A nominations board will be appointed after the dissolution of Parliament. There are members in the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) who will crossover when the election draws closer.

“We will consider them after nominations are presented. The Working Committee will decide on UNPs who stand against the party and form new alliances.

The Working Committee informed MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara to discuss the symbol issue with me,” he said.
