A maximum retail price (MRP) of Rs. 3,000 is to be imposed on pulse oximeters given the increase in demand for the medical device, with the relevant gazette notification to be published soon.
According to the Pharmaceutical Production, Supply and Regulation State Ministry, the decision was made at a meeting held at the Ministry, where the quality of pulse oximeters in the market was discussed. The Ministry stated that 5,200 devices imported to the country without proper registration have been seized by National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) offices. Only five pulse oximeter suppliers are registered with the NMRA as of now. The suppliers are Medex Holding, Sunway Holdings, Digital Cells, Mega Meditech, and George Steuart Health. Details of registered suppliers, brands and models are available on the NMRA website. According to the NMRA, the proliferation of low quality, substandard and falsified medical devices in the market have been observed during pandemic, putting the lives of people at very high risk.
