Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MPs Dr. Kavinda Jayawardhana and Harshana Rajakaruna yesterday filed a fundamental rights petition in the Supreme Court, seeking an order to establish an independent investigation committee to probe the actions of health authorities, including the Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA), in relation to the ongoing approval of substandard drugs and unlicensed medical devices.
The petition has identified Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, the Chairman and members of NMRA, Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena, and several others as respondents.
The petition filed on behalf of the duo by Counsel Dimuthu Kuruppuarachchi argued that, in accordance with the authority’s decision, the import and distribution of certain drugs are not suitable for human use or consumption.
The petitioners contend that the respondents have jeopardised public health by permitting the distribution of these drugs to hospitals and the general public without adequate research, in violation of established procurement procedures and health guidelines.
